Is Document Translation Different Than Other Translation Services?

Some translation companies bill themselves as specialists in document translation services. What does this mean exactly? Is translation of text contained in documents somehow different than translation of other text?

A big part of our responsibility as a translation company is to match the best suited resources with the requirements for each project.

Fundamentally the translation process seeks to express equivalent meaning in a target language relative to its original source language text. Whether the source language text is contained in some type of document (e.g., legal contract, handbook, manual, etc.) or something else the basic objective is not changed. Mainly what changes from one translation project to another are the linguists assigned to the project due to the languages involved and the subject matter. A big part of our responsibility as a translation company is to match the best suited resources with the requirements for each project.

Document Translation Project Steps

The sequence of steps for document translation projects often follows the general steps below:

  1. The client contacts us for information and/or sends us their document file(s) to quote for translation (click for quote request instructions).
  2. We review the document file(s) sent by the client. Fees are determined by the number of words for translation. A written quote is prepared and emailed to the client.
  3. The client reviews our quote and if they approve we then begin the translation project. Our standard document translation services include both translation plus post-translation proofreading by a second translator (translators native speaking in the target language). On average professional translators can process about 2500 words per day so schedules depend on the number of words in the project.
  4. Upon completion of the translation and proofreading processes documents are given formatting attention and then delivered to the client. If the client accepts the project it’s considered complete.
